Tattoo in Vietnam

You're going on vacation and you want to get a tattoo while you're there. Why not? There are so many great artists out there, why limit yourself to your hometown? Getting a tattoo while traveling can be fun and exciting. Right? But you should know it can also be a disaster.

In Vietnam, tattoo is a great tradition of body art. In the past, During the Ly dynasty (1009 – 1225), the king, mandarins and troops would have had tattoos, especially on their chest and legs, with their own personalised images. A sailor might opt for a crocodile, which was seen as a holy serpent in Viet culture.

Therefore, a tattoo of its image on their body would help prevent them from being killed in the water by an orca. Under the Tran dynasty (1225-1400), members of the royal guard tattooed the phrase “Thien tu Quan”, which meant the king’s protectors. Generals and soldiers preparing to face the Yuan-Mongol invaders from the north, tattooed the words “Sat that” on their arms, which meant simply “Kill the invaders.”

Under the reign of King Tran Nhan Tong (1279-1293) tattooing flourished. Mandarins, soldiers and commoners often tattooed the image of a dragon onto their body to show that they were aware of the nation’s origins as according to legend the Viet race was borne from a dragon and a fairy. Others tattooed words expressing their willingness to sacrifice themselves for the nation’s independence.
