August in Davao City marks the Kadayawan Festival — a month-long thanksgiving celebration of life and to the region's bountiful harvest. Historically, this celebration traces its roots during the early years of Mindano (pre-Spaninh era) where ethnic tribes residing at the foot of Mt. Apo pay their respects and thanksgiving to their god, Manama. Today, Kadayawan evolved into a colorful celebration paraded in the streets of Davao earning the title "festival of festivals" and the "King of Festivals" of the country.
With this year's theme, "Ten Tribes, One Vibe," a total of 20 delegates from all over the Davao region and its neighboring provinces competed during the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan street dancing competition held at the streets of Davao last Aug. 18.
Each contingent, adorned in colorful and vibrant costumes, payed tribute to Mindanao's indigenous and Muslim tribes (see list below) through a showcase of gracefully choreographed dances, chants and drums beats unique to their respective chosen tribe. Their well-crafted props also added highlights to their performance.
It is said that an estimated 70,000 local and international tourists witnessed the event and I was lucky to be one of them, together with my film photographer friends LG and Enrico. Since we were able to secure a media pass, we were able to get a "front row access" to the competition located in Rizal Park to witness their performances up-close. We didn't mind that our armpits were sweating and got almost dehydrated. We were there to enjoy.
Fun Fact: The 10 indigenous and Muslim tribes living in Davao City are the Ata, Matigsalug, Ovu-Manuvo, Klata-Djangan, Tagabawa, Tausog, Maguindanao, Maranao, Kagan, and Sama. (source: http://www.kadayawan.com)
Bambad National High School of Isulan, Sultan Kudarat Province hailed as the grand prize winner (Php500,000 cash) in the open category followed by Notre Dame of Sto. Niño of South Cotabato (2nd, Php400,000 cash) and Cotabato City's Kutawato Institute of Technology Foundation (3rd, Php300,000 cash). Mabuyok sa Mainit Cultural Troupe from Mainit, Surigao del Norte (Php200,000 cash) and Davao Del Norte's Talaingod Bobongan Dance Arts of Talaingod (Php100,000 cash) also grabbed the 4th and 5 place, respectively.
In the Davao-based category, Jesus Soriano National High School bagged 1st place (Php500,000 cash) followed by Sta. Ana Performing Arts Guild (Php400,000 cash) and Tribu Kalibungan of Fatima Elementary School (Php300,000 cash). San Isidro Elementary School (Php200,000 cash) and Vicente Hizon Elementary School (Php100,000 cash) also grabbed the 4th and 5th place, respectively.
